Her term ends on June 30, and her successor will be chosen in May.
Hong Kong: Hong Kong's leader Carrie Lam announced Monday that she will step down in June, ending a divisive term that saw democracy protests squashed and strict pandemic curbs plunge the business hub into international isolation.
The bill initially set off during the spring and into early summer, with more than a million people taking to the streets.
But Lam had lost support across the political spectrum.
Hong Kongers have been leaving the city over the last two years at a rate not seen since the period before the handover.
Lam softened her tone after the widespread criticism.
